How to Grow Lemon Trees

Did you know you can grow lemon trees from lemon seeds. That right, it can be done. Why do I know? "You ask". I grew them in a cup on my window seal in the kitchen.

This is what I did and it worked. I found my pretty tea cup I wanted to use....added the best potting soil to the cup, then planted about 4 organic lemon seeds in the cup about 1/2 inch to 1 inch deep in the wet dirt. To me it is easier to wet the dirt first before planting the seeds in it. You can add small pebbles on top of dirt to make it look pretty if you like. These little lemon trees will not make lemons but they do look very cute and smell good..

How to grow a lemon tree from seed

When life gives you lemons, grow trees!
If you’ve ever seen a flowering lemon tree, you’ll understand why. For those of you who haven’t, allow me explain. Their lush, dark green, oval leaves have a glossy texture that shimmers in sunlight. Their delicate white flowers bloom with a citrus fragrance and are soft to the touch. Their exotic nature provides an alluring quality. And, finally, they bear the exciting possibility of fruit!
Typically, lemon trees flourish outdoors year-round in hot, sunny regions, but they can also thrive indoors as edible houseplants in cold-season climates. At the organic food store where I work we have a healthy lemon cutting producing massive fruit in a garage setting all year. It makes for an impressive sight during the dead of a Canadian winter!

And while rooting cuttings is a sensible option for fast fruit, lemon tree cuttings are not readily available in many parts of the world. But lemons are another story. And although it may take anywhere from 3-6 years for your tree to be capable of producing fruit, there is something extra rewarding about starting from seed. I currently have six strong little seedlings on the go, all of which were germinated in the middle of winter with very little effort. Watching them grow has been an exciting and fascinating experience and I know the best is yet to come.
Here is a step-by-step guide to growing your very own lemon tree from seed:
Things you’ll need:
1. A lemon. Make sure you purchase an organic lemon since some non-organic lemon seeds may be “duds”, incapable of germinating. Any organic lemon will do, but if you have climate or space restrictions, you may want to try looking for a specific variety called a “Meyer” lemon. Meyer lemons are a smaller type of lemon, often grown for ornamental purposes, and are thus better suited for indoor containers. I chose Meyer seeds for these reasons, but you can use any seed that makes sense for your situation.

2. Potting soil. I would guess that any potting soil will do, but I suggest using one with a blend of peat, perlite, vermiculite, and organic fertilizer. Every single one of the seeds I planted in this type of certified organic potting mix have sprouted beautifully, so I think it’s fair to say that it works.
3. Container/pot. A container (with drainage holes) that is 5-6” deep and a few inches in diameter will be sufficient for sprouting; however, the seedling will need to be re-potted into a much larger container. Mature lemon trees prefer a container that is wider rather than deeper, so I suggest planting your seedling in a pot that is 10-16” deep and 12-18” in diameter. Your baby tree will happily make itself at home in this larger container for the next few years, at which time you may want to upgrade again.
4. A grow light or lots of sun. Lemon trees need a lot of light, especially when they are sprouting and require 10-14 hours of it each day. If you don’t have a consistently sunny window (like me), get a grow light. They don’t cost much and will prove their worth in healthy green foliage.
Method for sprouting the lemon seed:
1. Pre-moisten your potting soil. Put some soil into a bucket and mix in some water until the soil is damp all the way through.
2. Fill your container with the pre-moistened soil. Leave about an inch of space below the rim of your container.
3. Slice open your lemon and choose a seed that looks completely full of life. Pop it into your mouth and suck on it until all the flesh is removed and the lemon flavour is gone. Do not allow the seed to dry out at any time. It needs to stay moist in order to germinate. I suggest keeping it in your mouth until you’re ready to plant.
4. Plant your seed! While it’s moist, plant your seed about 1/2″ below the soil level. Cover it completely with soil and water well with a squirt bottle or gentle watering can.
5. Cover your container with breathable plastic to keep your seeds warm and moist. I used a piece of clear garbage bag with holes poked into it and a rubber band to securely hold it in place.
6. Place the container in a warm location and observe for the next few days. Keep in mind: your seed needs warmth and moisture in order to germinate. Don’t allow the potting soil to dry out completely. Also take caution that you don’t cook your seed in its little greenhouse. Too much heat and moisture could lead to a rotten seed! You’re aiming to achieve a nice balance, so if you feel like the soil is warm enough without the plastic then it’s probably safest to remove it.
7. In about two weeks you may notice a sprout emerging from the soil. Once it appears, remove the plastic (if it’s still on) and place the little guy in a warm location with plenty of direct sunlight. Supplement sun with your grow light if needed.

8. Care for your new baby and watch it grow! Provide it with:

• Water. Ensure that the soil is damp at all times, especially when your lemon tree is young. Do not allow it to sit in a puddle of stagnant water though; those drainage holes are there for good reason.
• Sunlight. Place it in a warm sunny window where it will receive eight hours of direct sunlight each day, or supplement some sun for a grow light. Since Toronto rarely seems to get any sun in the winter, my sprouts reside in a well-lit window under the warm rays of a grow light for 12 hours each day.
• Food. In order to keep your lemon tree healthy and growing the soil will eventually need to be replenished with nutrients. I suggest feeding it an organic fertilizer, such as compost or vermicompost, once it has developed a nice little set of leaves. Dig a little trench around the base of your tree, fill it with compost and water it well. Or, serve it up as compost tea. Try feeding it twice a year or as needed, but do not overfeed! When it comes to fertilizing, less it best; so if in doubt, put it off a bit longer. (Another option is to start your seed in potting soil with vermicompost or worm castings mixed into it).
• Love. Spend some time looking at your new citrus friend. Pay attention to its growth. Feel it, talk to it, sing to it, but don’t try to dance with it. Get into the habit of watching for browning leaves and checking the underside of leaves for pests. Just like us, our plants can fall victim to bugs and disease and may sometimes require some extra love and affection.

Could you imagine never taking time out to reflect back and be thankful for what has been given to you. It would not bring much relief. How sad.

It is said that life is not greener on the other side... but I believe it can be in a sense of belief.

Life is given to us freely to use as we see fit, to live and to love. We can choose to live life on our terms and belief. Freedom is and will always be a choice for us no matter who says it is not.

Ireland means a lot to my heart because of a dear friend of mine whom is from Ireland born and raised there by his parents up until the age to leave and live his life. I truly enjoyed knowing my friend from Ireland he had such love for his country and this song Danny Boy.

Ireland is rich in green grace as well as tradition.. many an old timer there will tell you a good old story of Ireland and even a joke or two. My friend told many a good joke... I can hear the laughter he left his captured audience by a good old joke.

Who would not want to go to Ireland and see the beauty to behold.  There is yet one place to be explored and to cherish a life time of memories of happy times, old charms, old jokes and stories to be heard, peace and relaxation. Perhaps an Old Irish Blessing will begin the journey.

Exchange of Flowers!

I made a new friend. I was happy to do so.

Here is my true story.

Yesterday we were driving in our neighborhood going to the local drug store.

I have noticed this neighbor’s beautiful flowers out in front of her house for several spring seasons.

I notice she was outside so I ask hubby to slow down and let me ask her what the name of those flowers were. My husband pulled up beside her curb and I ask her.

She called a name I was not familiar with and I told her they were just beautiful. She explained to me that they smelled beautiful too and they multiply in a year with just a few. I could smell them from our car window.

She ask me if I would like a starting plant from them and I said yes I would. So she proceeded to get her shovel and I walked with her to the flower bed on the side. She dug up the clump of flowers and put them in her bucket and said, I do this all the time for people who want them.

We talked for about 20 minutes and I told her I would bring her a flower from my garden that my sister shared with me years ago. It is of the  cactus  family we think, that you don’t have to water very often. It blooms out beautiful clumps of purple flowers that last through the heat of Texas summers. She was very interested and accepted my free offer.

Making new friends in neighborhood is not a bad thing. It turns out she was from Germany decent and loved the USA.

Also you might find  this interesting to know, most neighborhoods have Neighborhood Watch club. That right, and it is very good for instance for the elderly in the neighborhoods because they are being watch to protect them from any unwanted suspicious person lurking about, robbers, gangs and such.

Our good neighbor across the street from us told us about this. It is free and you can even start one up in your own neighborhood. It is wise to know what is going on in one’s neighborhood to know if your safe or not. Drive by shootings are on the way out because of this Neighborhood watch.

I believe you will agree being involved in the neighborhood watch is most important to keep our neighborhoods safe for us and our children for years to come and for generations coming.

Making it a point of importance will be noticed by those you don’t want in your neighborhoods with the signs in the yard of the of the leader of this group will make an impact.

Apricot Lemon Cookies

Do you like to make cookies for your children? Here is a simple recipe easy enough to make for your children for an after school snack.  What child would not like these cookies. As a matter of fact what adult would not like these delicious cookies.

Cookies are a family favorite at our house. The smell of fresh baked cookies filling the house is just what will get you attention in the kitchen quicker than anything. That smell will linger for hours pleasing the hard to please child.  

It is important to the body to use as much organic ingredients as you can in this recipe. It is not hard to switch. Your body will thank you with healthy body for years to come.

I found out switching to organic saved me a lot of money to doctors office because I was sick, and off of operating table because of illness cause by the wrong foods I chose. Organic makes sense because the foods are not sprayed 40 times with cancer causing poisons. Ever wondered why the simple fruit, grapes , look bigger than last years in the  grocery stores. It is the grapes are spread at least 40 times. Now can you image what that is doing to the body with the poisons. Those same grapes have no taste. Tasteless grapes are not good. Do a test and taste for your self. Organic grape against a non- organic grape. You will taste the difference. 

  

Apricot-Lemon Cookies

Here is a recipe for delicious cookies.

2 packages 2 layer-size lemon cake mix (pudding type)

2 cups of snipped dried apricots

⅔ cup margarine or butter, melted

2 eggs

1- 12 ounce package (2 cups) miniature semisweet chocolate pieces

In a large mixing bowl combine cake mix margarine, eggs and ¼ cup of water;

mix well. (Dough will be stiff) stir in chocolate pieces. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 degree for 8 to 10 minutes or till golden. Cool 2 minutes on cookie sheet.

Remove; cool on wire rack.

makes 7 dozen.

Cocoa

About 14 years ago I decided I wanted another poodle, our first poodle was white just like the
one in this picture her name was Sugar. So I started looking for someone who sold registered poodles in the local paper which I luck out
and found a women that raised poodles so I called and sure enough she had baby poodles just
born so she said I could come and look at them. I did and they were adorable. There were only
2 left that did not already have a deposit on. So I picked out the poodle I wanted and gave her
the down payment on the poodle. She begin to tell me the story of the generation of this poodle. She had come from a long blood line of show dogs and from a famous Texas Goouchy line that
were famous poodle show dogs. Well I was impressed. And she told me when I come to pick
her up to take her home she would have newspaper clipping ready for me about Texas
Goouchy. The puppies were about 1 and 1/2 weeks old so I knew it would be at least 4 weeks
old or 5 before I could pick my poodle.
I waited ever so patiently as I could, and one day I got a call from the women that I could pick up
my poodle that the mother was trying to kill the pup at 3 1/2 weeks old. So I was so excited to
hear this news, as soon as my husband got off work we went to pick up my poodle and paid for
her, and sure enough she gave me a copy of the poodles bloodline with a newspaper clipping of
the picture of famous Texas poodle.
I named my little fluff ball Cocoa. She was so playful and loved being played with. She was so
tiny and cute. We took her just about everywhere we went. Our friends invited us to go on a trip to Mississippi and we took her along in the car with us she
slept laying across the back of my neck almost all the way there. We had such fun with her.
I think of this today and our many travel 's with her in our motor home and hotels we stay in and
how great she did. I believe traveling with a small dog as we did worked out just fine and she
seem to adapt to the traveling very well.
If we left her which was not to often we would always leave her with her vet that boarded pets.
Now Cocoa is old and blind and we know we probably won't have her with us but just a few
more years. I will not be looking forwarded to that day. As we think of her as our baby and how
much she means to us. We do have very fond memories that we will cherish forever.
A few years ago she died in her sleep. We will all ways miss her and forever in our hearts.

The sunflowers or Helianthus are a beauty soaring over 4 ft. Planting them around a bird feeder will keep the birds happy all summer long. The birds will eat the seeds inside the sunflower.  All Helianthus species are native to North America, except for three species in South America.

How to Grow Sunflowers

These hardy, easy-to-grow annuals brighten up any garden with their showy, large, dramatic heads and petals. Sunflowers can grow anywhere from two to fifteen feet tall depending on the variety, and their seeds can even be harvested and enjoyed as a delicious snack. Follow the instructions below to learn how to plant, maintain, and harvest sunflowers.

1. Choose a variety of sunflower that fits your garden needs. While most sunflower varieties grow to be several feet tall, there are some miniature varieties that grow under three feet tall. Look at the  list below of popular varieties, large and small:

• Mammoth: You can grow your own mammoth, brining them back from the dead!
• Autumn Beauty: This variety produces huge flowers that produce up to six inches in diameter. It gets its name from the fall-like color of flowers it produces.  The colors bronze and mahogany flowers are not uncommon on these large stalks  growing upwards to seven feet.
• Sunbeam: Sunbeam is a medium-sized variety, soaring upwards at about five feet tall and producing flowers about five inches in diameter. The flower petals are long and the flower center is often yellow, making for a dramatic show to any bouquet.
• Teddy Bear: This miniature variety grows upward to three feet tall and is perfect for a tight-fit on space in your garden.

2. Plant in full sun. Sunflowers like warm to hot climates in full sunshine during the day-light hours. Climates with long hot summers are perfect for growing sunflowers.

3. Search for a good spot. It is best to protect sunflowers from the wind. Plant sunflower seeds at a fence, the side of a house, or behind a row of sturdy trees. Plant your sunflowers on the north side of your garden. This keeps the large sunflower stalks from shading other plants in your garden.

4. Check the soil. Sunflowers prefer a slightly acidic to somewhat alkaline soil, however, sunflowers are relatively resilient and can grow in most types of soil.

5. Make sure your soil drains well. Though sunflowers are hard to kill, the one thing that can harm them is flooded soil.

• proper drainage is a must, or build a simple planter box instead.
• Build a raised garden box out of cedar boards, which come in 8-foot lengths. Cedar is a good choice for a garden bed because it won’t rot when exposed to water.

6. Allow the soil to warm. Plant sunflower seeds at the beginning of summer after the soil has completely warmed, between mid-April and late May.

Dehydration occurs when the total body water is less than normal. Usually it involves loss of both water and electrolytes, which are minerals such as sodium, chloride and potassium.

Dehydration is caused by either a lack of food or water intake or an increase in water loss through illness or injury. A fever further increases the loss of water. When there is not enough body water, fluid shifts out of the body cells to compensate, leaving
the cells deficient in necessary water. This leads to dehydration.

The severity of the dehydration
is based on the magnitude of these body water shifts. Dogs lose fluid through: breathing, panting, elimination, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and evaporation through the feet and other body
surfaces. Dogs replenish fluid by drinking water or other liquids and by eating moist foods.

Changes in attitude (i.e. appears more apprehensive)

The skin loses elasticity- Pinch a little skin between your thumb and forefinger on your dog's
back. When you release it, it should pop back into place immediately. As the tissue under the
skin loses moisture, the skin moves back more slowly. In extreme cases, the skin doesn't pop back. Delayed capillary refill time- Place your index finger firmly against the gums so that they appear white. Remove your finger and see how quickly the blood returns to the gums. The time it takes for the gums of a dehydrated dog to return to their pink state will be slower than normal. Rectal temperature remains > 105° F

How to get rich? I see this so much on the web. I think it is all a scam and frankly I dislike crooks with a passion. If one could get rich by doing what these scammers say everyone would be doing. Now scammers will have a message at the end of their scam stating you might want to take advantage of this offer today it might not be here tomorrow. Give us your money because I won't be here tomorrow is how it should read.

Be aware- if they say give me your money make sure you run. That is all they want is your money. It is sad because most people are looking to make extra money online everyday and really needing the money then get caught up in the crooks hands.

There has been reported many people will give money up front for a job to be done, and guess what? Once you hand over the money they are gone vanished never heard from again. You job still needing to be done. Scammers have been known to come to one’s front door and proclaim they will do certain jobs but must be paid upfront even claiming their company requires this . They say they will be back tomorrow and never show up tomorrow.. The elderly are the most targeted.

These crooks are hard to track down because their information they give is not real and so therefore they cannot be found.

The media has reported very little about this and not often enough to make sure more people are aware of what is going on and how to avoid the crooks.

More needs to be done to get the information out there so people who are targeted will be made aware and be on the the look out and report it.

If someone comes to you front door wanting to do a job for you. Do not open the door to strangers, they could harm you. Never open the door always look through the peephole of your door and see who it is. If you do not recognize them don't open door.

There are neighborhood watches now that people can join and get information of what crime is going on and what to do to not become a victim. Those that are in the neighborhood watch will be kind enough to watch more closely the elderly in the neighborhood.

It has been said by the police department if you see any suspicious person in your area lurking about that should not be there call them the police and report it. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Smile and the whole world smiles with you is the most beautiful expression one can do. Smiling makes a happy day even if it is gloomy. Someone is always in need of a smile. Giving a smile causes a chain reaction and can make someone's day. It is better to give than to receive it is said, but in this case both is better. Giving a smile and receiving a smile. When I look at someone not smiling, I wonder what kind of a day that person is having and when I smile at that person that person smiles back just a given that this happens. It is automatic.

As we all know as grandparents it seems hard to know how to entertain a teen granddaughter and her friend when they come to visit during the summer. In today’s world of electronics it can be a bit mind boggling as to know which electronics the teens like to use. I found out the Wii is the most popular still and that can work in a second of something fun for teens to do while you get ready for the next adventure of taking them out to explore the city you live in.

Choosing an eatery for lunch can be another fun adventure. In most neighborhoods are the fast food eateries. Sonic happens to be my choice because it is in the theme I have used for today’s theme in keeping with going back in time. This eatery drive- in is like the old drive-in’s with the carhops, the girls were called, which makes it fun. I choose the theme going back in time when I was a teen to give them a picture of where when and how we lived and had fun.

In keeping with the five hour framework theme taking the girls to where I use to go high school. This was interesting to them because of the fact part of the school was built underground because of the flight pattern of the military planes was right over the school and some of those B 52 planes are so big and loud that it was disturbing classes and the teachers. The flight of the planes was so low it shook my neighbor’s china dishes and broke some I told the girls.

On our way from the school still in our neighborhood we drove down to my favorite spot of the lake, pointing out where my sister and I use to walk around the lake, in those days teens could not drive until they turned 16. I was 14 at this time I explained. This seemed to be a hit with the girls, they enjoyed the big overlook where they could sit on the huge rock formation, legs and feet dangling off the edge of the cliff, and looking at the island of trees in the distance called moss point, the glare of the sun across the lake on a clear day with blue skies makes for the most beautiful picture setting, also there is a rock steps winding down to the water to get a closer look which they enjoyed. They loved their picture we took of them walking back up the winding rock steps back to the top. Once at the top again there is a huge covered patio with huge fireplace, I explained our church teen group came there for outings and cooked in this big cast iron pot Hobo Stew, each teen brought a can of their favorite vegetables to add to the stew already cooking for a delicious warm cup of Hobo stew on a cool October day.

On our way back from the lake in the neighborhood they enjoyed seeing where I lived as a teen, and stopped in for refreshment at the neighborhood hamburger joint and grocery and gas.

Being a teen girl today does not exclude having fun where the teen boys hang out that is if it is clean and safe and happens to have been in our city for 50 years is the go- cart track. It is a cheap fun thrill for teen girls or boys and only five dollars. They had so much fun and the go carts go pretty fast around the tract. The girls could not stop talking about it. If you really want to surprise a grandson of eleven years old, tell him you are taking him somewhere he will really like and you cannot give him any more information, because it is a surprise, then watch his eyes get so big with a big smile on his face when you pull up in the parking lot.. He will not be able to get out the car fast enough and what fun he will have when his grandparents let him ride two times instead of just once.

Where can you take the girls that is safe and where you can turn them loose, and they can walk around for about an hour looking and touching every item and having so much fun, of course the local antique mall, of course the girls are still looking and looking and looking while the grandparents find a place to sit a bit and rest. By the time the hour is up you see no sign of the girls coming down the aisle so what do you do, well you can either walk the entire attic mall or you have the checker call them on the loudspeaker to the front is the better idea. The girls had such an enjoyable five hours they could not stop talking about it. This proved to this grandma there is life with teens and fun.

Tuesday Junking

This morning was a bit different than normal. Hubby decided we need to go junking. Now junking might not sound too interesting to anyone, until it is explained.

Hubby started off by telling me this man in the neighborhood picks up metal people have set out by the curb then he goes and sells it and makes a good living by doing this.

Hubby said each Tuesday and Wednesday people put stuff out at curb they no longer want and I saw some lumber. I want to go and pick up just down the street from us to build some more birdhouses.. So I said I want to go just to get out of house.

After he picked it up he said let’s go up and down the streets of our neighborhood and see what else we can find.  We did this for about 15 to 20 minutes and he picked up some more lumber pieces and also a  nice big birdbath someone had set at curb and did not want.

We continued for about another 15 minutes and got more wood pieces. I was so excited about the bird bath and he was excited about the wood. When we got home hubby said yep Tuesday mornings will be our Junk day, the day before the trash men come.

He unloaded birdbath in the front yard and I cleaned it out and added water, went to our local plant man in the neighborhood and bought a few lantana flowers and planted them around it. Looked so good.

There is something to say about free, it looks good in our yard. The little birds are already drinking from the birdbath. Hubby has been saying all afternoon I cannot wait until next Tuesday... and you know what I cannot either.
